Kenai council enacts ordinance to accept state grant for library materials

The Kenai City Council on Sept. 17 enacted Ordinance No. 3485-2025 to accept and appropriate a state public library assistance grant for purchase of library materials.
The measure was introduced and moved by Vice Mayor Knackstedt and carried by unanimous roll call. Katya Wolf, the city’s library director, told the council the grant is annual and will be folded into the library’s materials budget and used to purchase materials throughout the year. “This is an annual grant. It’s the public library assistance grant, and we are planning on just adding that to our materials budget,” Wolf said.
The grant has been part of the library’s funding for decades, Wolf said, and the council members commended the library for securing the award. Council member Rick Hasena praised Wolf and the library team for “sourcing and securing additional funds,” and several council members echoed that appreciation before the roll call vote.
Roll-call votes recorded six yes votes and the ordinance was enacted. The ordinance text and the amount of the grant were not specified on the public record during the hearing.
Council discussion centered on gratitude for staff work rather than on changes to library policy or operations. The library director said the funds will be integrated into the existing materials line and spent over the remainder of the fiscal year.
