Construction updates: Iroquois substantial completion, Van Antwerp work advancing; district reports on-time, under-budget progress

Turner Construction and project partners told the Niskayuna Central School District board that the Iroquois Middle School building is substantially complete and occupied and that Van Antwerp construction and rehabilitation are progressing on schedule.
A Turner representative said the Iroquois building is "substantially complete" with only exterior landscaping, stone and fencing work remaining. At Van Antwerp, crews completed six classrooms in a new configuration, the site's studio area is under demolition, elevator shafts and foundation work are underway, and a playground installation is expected to be complete by the end of the week with fencing and paving to follow.
District staff highlighted several completed or in-progress items across projects: replacement and commissioning of 82 water-to-air geothermal units at the high school, epoxy floor work in the wrestling gym, pending sanding and refinishing in the Blatnik gym, interior panel installations projected for mid-October, and exterior cladding scheduled soon. Turner and the district said favorable bid results allowed additional summer work in occupied areas and that some funds from the 2021 referendum are projected to be available to accelerate remaining Van Antwerp scopes.
Board members and staff praised school leaders and facilities crews for achieving an opening week marked by active construction with minimal operational disruption. The district plans student-led board tours of Iroquois and a combined community open house and school commissioning event in October once work is complete.
No new capital spending motion was taken at the meeting; presenters and staff said the projects remain on schedule and are running below original cost projections, freeing capacity for further elementary school work in the coming months.
