Board approves geotechnical survey for Bath County Middle School; Solid Ground recommended as low bidder

The Bath County Board of Education approved a geotechnical-services contract for the Bath County Middle School renovation on Sept. 15, selecting Solid Ground as the recommended bidder to perform targeted borings and report on subsurface conditions.
Jonathan, a staff member presenting the recommendation, told the board that three quotes were received and that the lowest quote with the shortest turnaround time was from Solid Ground. He said the borings would be performed at a few locations where new water lines to an annex, a proposed gas line to the kitchen, and the mechanical yard are planned, and that the resulting geotechnical report will inform seismic design and decisions about soil replacement depth for underground work.
Jonathan said the board had budgeted for both topographic and geotechnical surveys and that the geotechnical item currently under consideration was about $6,500; he added that prior topographic work had been approved earlier and that the combined survey costs were still below original budget estimates.
Why it matters: the geotechnical report will influence foundation, underground utility and seismic design for the middle school renovation and can affect construction scope and costs.
Vote: the board approved the recommendation; the motion was made by Carla and seconded by Eric.
