Osceola commissioners proclaim Dec. 10 Runway to Hope Day and September 2025 Pediatric Cancer Awareness Month

The Osceola Board of County Commissioners unanimously approved two proclamations recognizing Runway to Hope and designating September 2025 as Pediatric Cancer Awareness Month.

Commissioner Grieve introduced the proclamation declaring Dec. 10, 2025, as Runway to Hope Day and a second proclamation recognizing September 2025 as Pediatric Cancer Awareness Month. Both proclamations passed by voice vote.

Representatives from Runway to Hope thanked the board and described the nonprofit's work providing direct emergency financial assistance and a total wellness program for families of children with cancer. Jennifer Rice Palmer, identified as vice president with Rosen Hotels and Resorts, and Laura Lochner, the organization's director, spoke about volunteer support and fundraising. A Runway to Hope representative said the group's recent gala drew 2,480 attendees and raised $1.4 million for its programs.

The proclamations recited national statistics used in the proclamations: an estimate that 46 children per day (16,790 per year) are diagnosed with cancer in the United States and that about 1 in 285 children will be diagnosed by their 20th birthday; the text also cited socioeconomic impacts described in the proclamation. The board applauded the organization and its local volunteers.

Why it matters: The proclamations formally recognize local nonprofit work supporting children with cancer and elevate awareness of pediatric cancer in Osceola County.
