Resident urges council to address traffic and crosswalks near schools on Southeast 20th Avenue

Valerie Dent, a District 2 resident, told the City Council on Sept. 23 that traffic along 20th Avenue Southeast and nearby streets has "tripled" since an elementary school moved to a new campus on 20th Avenue and that current crossings and stop signs are unsafe for students.
Dent said she recorded traffic between 8 and 9:15 a.m., counting 159 cars on Twelfth Avenue Southeast with an average speed of 32 miles per hour. "They deserve five of those push-button yellow crosswalks," Dent told the council, asking for four crosswalks at one corner and another on Pioneer Avenue. She said stop signs were being treated like suggestions and that pedestrian safety near multiple schools in the area needs improvement.
Mayor David Castellan asked Dent to leave contact information with staff so the city could follow up. No formal city action or motion was made during the meeting on the specific crossing requests; the item was offered during the public-comment period.
