District discusses changing volunteer background-check interval; SRO recommends three-year checks

The board heard a staff discussion on volunteer background checks and the frequency of required renewals. Officer Scott Dressler said that after consulting local chiefs and school-safety associations, he believes a three-year renewal cycle is a reasonable step forward from the district’s current “one-and-done” approach.
Dressler said the recommendation reflects conversations with multiple school resource officers, chiefs and school officials and that a one‑year cadence would be preferable in his view but that a three-year cycle is a reasonable intermediate step now. Superintendent Mr. White confirmed the district previously discussed a five-year interval before the pandemic interrupted the effort.
No formal policy change was adopted at the meeting; Dressler presented the recommendation as a discussion item and the board did not take action that night. Board members thanked Dressler for outreach to law enforcement partners and noted the input will be useful as the district considers policy changes.
