Methuen High band trip to Disney World approved for April 2026; trip is optional and privately funded

Methuen — The Methuen School Committee voted Sept. 24 to approve a proposed Methuen High School band trip to Walt Disney World and Universal Studios scheduled for April 18–22, 2026.

Band Director Bridal McGonigal presented the proposal and told the committee the itinerary includes four days at Disney parks and one day at Universal, a requested Magic Kingdom parade performance (pending Disney approval) and an educational studio session where students work with a professional conductor. McGonigal said Kaleidoscope Adventures, the vendor the band has used previously, quoted a per‑student price of $2,417 based on quad occupancy for a group of 70; the director said larger groups would reduce the per‑student cost.

The trip is optional and not funded by Methuen Public Schools. McGonigal said the Band Parents Association will lead fundraising (previously raising roughly $8,000–$10,000) and that the vendor offers scholarship opportunities and a crowdfunding option. The proposed adult chaperone team includes the band director, an assistant director, an administrator, a school nurse and four to six parent chaperones; the group will travel on private coaches in Florida and use a tour director from Kaleidoscope on site.

Committee discussion touched on cost, fundraising and background checks. Member Mary Beth Maxwell asked whether the district pays any portion; McGonigal replied, “No,” and reiterated that fundraising and vendor scholarships are the expected means for student support. Committee members also asked the administration to confirm that outside contracted staff who will have direct contact with students are cleared per the district’s vendor and chaperone requirements.

The motion to approve the trip was made by Member Shabilius and seconded by the vice chair; the committee voted in favor.
