Polk County approves payouts to clear accrued straight-time and affirms double pay for scheduled holiday work

Commissioners approved one-time payouts to eliminate accrued straight-time leave and granted a sheriff-requested payout for deputies and jail staff; the court cited a TAC recommendation and debated liability and operational impacts for jailers and dispatchers.
Polk County Commissioners Court voted to pay out accrued straight-time leave countywide and approved a separate payout request from Sheriff Lyons for deputies and jail staff.
The court approved a request from Sheriff Lyons to pay out accrued FLSA and straight time and holiday balances for deputies and jail staff; the sheriff’s request listed a total payout of $169,389.21 and noted an option to reduce that total to $122,420.66 if FLSA balances were paid down to an 80-hour cap. Commissioners also voted to pay out all straight-time leave countywide, a ledger balance the auditor described as equivalent to $144,434 in wages. Both measures passed by voice vote.
Officials said the payouts follow guidance from the Texas Association of Counties (TAC) and are intended to “clean up” long-standing leave accruals that county staff said created an open, unpredictable liability. The county auditor’s presentation said biweekly payrolls have been stable and the FY2025 payroll budget and year-to-date activity were included in the packet for the court’s review.
