Barbara Ferran introduced a newly formed nonprofit, Seniors of Columbiana County, during the Sept. 16 Columbiana City Council meeting and described the group’s activities, membership and future needs.
Ferran told council the organization held its first meeting in February 2025 and recently obtained 501(c)(3) tax‑exempt status. She said the group currently uses the Columbiana Library for regular social activities — bingo, bunko and Yahtzee — and maintains a Facebook group of about 85 members and an email list of roughly 20 people. Ferran said the group is decentralized and member‑driven.
Ferran said the group is in “phase 1” of exploring financial support and is looking for a headquarters separate from the library. She warned that if the group locates a headquarters in a residential property it “might need a variance of use permit.” When asked whether that would come to the planning commission, council confirmed planning commission review would apply.
Mayor Rick Noel and council members thanked Ferran for the introduction and noted the organization’s work addressing social isolation among older residents. No formal request or application was made at the meeting; Ferran said the appearance was an introductory presentation and that the group will likely return to the council with further requests or updates.
The council accepted the presentation as informational and entered the planning and park minutes into the record earlier in the meeting.
