Commission approves participation in opioid settlement distribution program

East Grand Rapids — The City Commission voted to approve the city’s participation in the national opioid settlement framework and to accept the local share of any settlement funds administered through the regional mechanism.
City staff described the regional settlement process and noted the city’s expected share and the requirement that subdivisions opt in to the multijurisdictional agreement or retain the right to pursue separate litigation. Commissioners voted in favor of participation and directed staff to return with recommended allocation options for prevention, treatment and related public‑health uses.
Staff said anticipated amounts were modest relative to municipal budgets and that the city will follow the settlement’s allowed uses and reporting rules if funds are received.
