Board approves flexibility to repurpose unfilled PreK–2 Spanish position if needed

The Luxemburg-Casco School District Board approved a request from administration to retain flexibility to repurpose an unfilled PreK–2 Spanish position for the remainder of the school year if the current long-term substitute does not continue in the role.

Administrators told the board the Spanish position opened in August and had received zero applicants as of the meeting. The district has a long-term substitute covering the class; that substitute initially said she would not stay for the full year but has recently indicated she might remain. Staff asked for flexibility allowing the district to advertise the opening either as a Spanish position (if the substitute declines) or as an elementary-licensed position assigned to teach character-strong/durable skills for the rest of the year.

A staff presenter said the alternative assignment would supplement classroom instruction in social-emotional and transition skills using the district’s Character Strong curriculum, and would be limited to the current school year if implemented. Board members approved the flexibility by voice vote.

If the district changes the posted position, administrators said they would advertise for candidates with an elementary license and report back to the board. The board discussion acknowledged staffing pressures in neighboring districts and uncertain candidate availability.

"If she decides not to and doesn't wanna do it, then I have that flexibility," the staff presenter said, describing the requested authority to alter the vacancy for the year.

The motion carried by voice vote.
