Summary
The Hampton City School Board approved and swore in Caleb Lucas and Sage Holden as student representatives and Ava Tanner as alternate for the 2025–26 school year.
The Hampton City School Board on Sept. 3 approved Caleb Lucas and Sage Holden as student representatives for the 2025–26 school year and swore in Ava Tanner as the alternate student representative.
The board voted to confirm the appointments after a motion from a board member and a second; the presiding official announced “Motion carries.” Following the vote, each student introduced themselves to the board and the public. Caleb Lucas, a senior at Phoebus High School, said he is "currently serving as drum major of the phenomenal marching phantoms" and is an academy ambassador and member of the National Honor Society. Sage Holden, a junior at Bethel High School in the Law and Public Safety academy, noted service on the Hampton Youth Commission and as a lead ambassador for her academy. Ava Tanner, the alternate from Bethel High School, identified herself as president of a nonprofit called Alternative World Changers Incorporated and president of the Youth in Government club.
After introductions, the board administered the oath to the student representatives. Each student repeated the pledge to support the constitutions of the United States and the Commonwealth of Virginia and to "faithfully and impartially discharge the duties incumbent upon me as a school board student representative for Hampton City Schools, according to the best of my ability." The board chair welcomed the students and invited family members in the audience to stand for recognition.
The student representative seats are advisory; the board did not change that status in this meeting. The board’s action followed the roll call that showed all members present for the meeting.
The student representatives are expected to participate in board activities during the 2025–26 school year and report on student perspectives at future meetings.
