Hancock County Commission approves sergeant retirement, defers deputy payout pending sheriff confirmation

Commissioners then considered payment of Oakes’s remaining vacation days, listed on the agenda as 28.43 days totaling $6,119.75. After discussion about accrual and usage, the commission amended its approval to make the payout contingent on confirmation from the sheriff’s office that the reported days and the dollar amount are correct.
Commissioner Ogden pressed for verification of the vacation total and said she preferred an amended motion making payment "pending confirmation" from the sheriff’s department. That amendment passed; the commissioners directed staff to contact the sheriff to confirm the days and amount before finalizing the payout.
Separately, the commission approved the retirement of Sergeant Jeffrey McIntyre, effective Sept. 30, 2025, and voted to approve payment of his remaining vacation time listed as 8.38 days totaling $2,030.64.
Several commissioners and the county prosecutor offered public thanks to both deputies for their service. The commission recorded the personnel actions in the meeting minutes and specified follow-up to confirm Oakes’s vacation calculation before funds are disbursed.
