Middleburg resident faults local paper for omitting Juneteenth coverage from community roundup

During public comment, Erlene Coleman, a Middleburg resident, said she was “a little disappointed” that a local publication’s pictures and a July community roundup did not mention the town’s Juneteenth celebration or its honorees.
Coleman, who identified herself as living at 205 Windy Hill Road, said she expected photos and recognition for a 1961 sit-in and for Ms. Ailes Cook, a 104-year-old honoree and former mayoral honoree, and the African American youth performers who participated in the event. She told council she found it “really, really sad” that the article prioritized pictures of fireworks and did not mention Juneteenth; Coleman said the omission made her feel that Black residents in Middleburg still face difficulties.
Coleman concluded by asking the town to recognize the Juneteenth celebration more fully in future community materials.
