Bassett said the draft would bring related provisions together so building inspectors, zoning inspectors, the director of public works, the police chief and the fire marshal could pursue nuisance enforcement from a single, clearer code section. The ordinance aims to replace unclear or outdated language in multiple code locations and give enforcement officers consistent tools to address chronic problems.
Bassett told council the goal is to provide “teeth” in enforcement and stated the city has historically underused public‑nuisance authorities. He described the consolidation as both a housekeeping and enforcement modernization step; no ordinance text was adopted at the meeting — Bassett presented the concept and the draft will be available for council review and future action if the council wishes to proceed.
Councilors asked procedural questions and thanked the attorney for drafting a consolidated approach; no public hearing or vote occurred at the meeting.
