Dayton board adopts several policies on second reading; additional policies set for first reading

The Dayton City School District Board of Education voted on Sept. 16 to adopt a set of revised and codified policies on second reading and read another package for first reading and public review.
Doctor Goodwin moved the resolution to adopt the policies presented for second reading, which included EBBA (first aid), EDEBA (1:1 student device policy), IGAE (health education), IGBL (parent and family involvement in education), IGBLA (promoting parental involvement), GFG (interrogations and searches) and JFGD (student privacy and immigration enforcement). Ms. Wicks seconded the motion. The clerk recorded the motion as adopted; the meeting record shows six yeses.
A board member asked how the public can comment on proposed policy changes. The board president and staff explained comments can be submitted to the superintendent’s office, the board office, or the legal office; the district indicated no comments had been received on the policies before the meeting.
Board Member Reinhardt acknowledged that some state-level laws require local adoption and said she did not agree with every item in the packet but would vote to comply with state law. “There are some policies and some legislation that… I think is not good health education for our students. It is difficult for me personally when it comes to this, because we are required by law to adopt this into our policy handbook,” Reinhardt said.
The meeting also included a first reading of additional policies, including the District Wellness Policy; those items were presented for review and will be posted in the superintendent’s office for public comment before a second reading and vote.
The board’s action completes the second-reading adoption for the listed policies and begins the public-review period for a second group of policies. The district legal office and superintendent’s office will review submitted comments before the board considers final adoption at the second reading.
