Gadsden schools, library invite public to 'Lights On for After School' celebration Oct. 21

Janie Bone, director of the 21st Century Program for Gadsden City Schools, told the Gadsden City Council that the district and Gadsden Public Library will host a Lights On for After School celebration on Oct. 21.
“Lights On is a national celebration where communities across America come together to shine a light on after school, to show why it matters,” Bone said. She described student showcases, STEM projects, a guest reader from the Challenger Center, a trunk-or-treat and an arcade as planned activities. Bone asked council members and the public to consider hosting one of about 10 trunk-or-treat stations and to “go blue” on Oct. 23 in support of after-school programs.
Bone said the program serves about 1,200 students in Gadsden and highlighted stories of students who gained confidence, pursued STEM projects, and received scholarships. She also said the After School Alliance selected the local celebration to be highlighted this year and that “one of our very own students was featured on the front page of the Washington Post this summer.” Bone thanked Gadsden Public Library staff, including Craig Scott and Hannah Gray, for partnership on the event and invited council members to attend.
The presentation was introductory; no formal action was taken by the council other than public recognition of the presenters. Organizers said volunteer and participation details will be shared on social media and by direct outreach.
