Huntington Forest residents urge rework of Leonard Road roundabout; city says developer will adjust device

A Huntington Forest resident told the Gastonia City Council on Sept. 16 that a new roundabout installed on Leonard Road is too small for many vehicles and is causing damage to rims and tires.
“Towing trailers every day for work, we have to drive over it,” resident Teddy Sharper said during public expression. “Fire trucks have to drive over it. School buses are going over it. Nobody can easily go around this if they pull anything larger than a compact SUV.” Sharper said neighbors reported scuffed rims and tires and that a fire marshal had recommended the installation be reevaluated.
Mayor Richard Franks and staff asked for the location, and engineering staff identified the site at Leonard Road near Hickory Hollow. Later in the meeting the city manager reported that staff had spoken with the developer and that the developer has scheduled removal of the roundabout and replacement with “something more accommodating.” The manager said engineering and the developer had discussed the issue the afternoon of the council meeting.
What’s next: City staff said they will communicate proposed changes to the affected neighborhood. The council did not take formal action; the item was raised during public comment and staff said they would follow up with the developer and the neighborhood.
