The council approved a lease with First United Methodist Church that will allow the city to use a section of the church’s parking lot across from the Gastonia Conference Center as public overflow parking.
Facilities staff said the leased area comprises 58 parking spaces on the Martin Luther King side of the lot. Council members were told the annual payment to the church will be $10,000, which amounts to approximately $172 per space per year.
Council members said the arrangement formalizes a long‑standing practice in which church leaders have allowed event and public parking on their property. The lease also would permit limited city work on the lot in coordination with the church, for example maintenance or temporary uses tied to events such as cold‑weather sheltering, council members said.
The resolution passed unanimously.
