Student council outlines expanded structure, homecoming plans and new committees

Gibson O'Meally, a senior and president of the Lewisburg High School student council, presented a student-council report at the Sept. 11 board meeting outlining organizational changes, membership, committees and tentative homecoming plans.
O'Meally said the high school student council has 41 representatives this year (an increase from about 35 last year) with 14 seniors, six juniors, 13 sophomores and eight freshmen. The council reorganized into four core committees: Budget and Finance; School Spirit; Social Media; and Staff Appreciation. The Budget and Finance Committee will manage the council’s internal grant-and-loan program and project funding; School Spirit will manage homecoming and related events; Social Media will maintain Instagram and Facebook accounts; and Staff Appreciation will plan events for teachers and other staff.
Homecoming Week was proposed for Oct. 6–11 with spirit days and a points competition by grade. Proposed spirit days included PJ Day, “Dress as a Teacher,” "White Lie Wednesday," class T-shirt day and Green-and-White Day. The student-council president said the homecoming theme is “masquerade” and the council is considering providing masquerade-style masks for students if funding allows. Proposed Thursday activities include outdoor games and a senior tailgate; Friday would include a pep rally and presentation of the court and class dance or lip-sync contest.
O'Meally also described changes in meeting cadence (business meetings moved to every Monday rather than every two weeks) to expedite proposals, a revised code of conduct for representatives, and plans for monthly meetings with class officer teams and a monthly newsletter. He thanked advisor Jeremy Lauver and several district staff members for support.
Board members asked a clarifying question about whether the dance theme would be “masquerade”; O'Meally confirmed it would. The materials and comments were presented as an informational student report; no board action was recorded on student-council items.
