West York students preview homecoming, fall athletics and youth outreach

Student leaders and athletics staff updated the West York Area School District Board on homecoming plans, fall sports activities and community outreach events.
Student council report Sadie Pacifico, student council community outreach chair, said the high school—s homecoming dance will be themed after the board game CLUE in a heist-style format, with the homecoming court portrayed as suspects and the student body invited to solve the mystery. Pacifico said the homecoming parade is scheduled for Wednesday, Oct. 1, from 6 to 8 p.m., with food trucks and a pep rally; the homecoming court will be announced Oct. 3 before the game. She also noted the drama department is accepting auditions for the fall play, a new Sherlock Holmes mystery to run in November.
Athletics and student leadership An athletics presenter (district staff) summarized summer and preseason activities: several students attended the YAIAA Student Leadership Summit at Spring Grove; teams ran summer workouts, weightlifting and skill development sessions; and sports teams attended out-of-area camps and clinics (examples cited included camps at Lycoming College, Alvernia College and California University of Pennsylvania). The presenter said football attended a clinic at Penn State and visited Blue Ridge High School and James Madison University.
Teams also partnered with local organizations to support athletes and community outreach: Coach Miller partnered with the YMCA to provide daily summer meals to participating athletes, lacrosse partnered with the parks program for introductory clinics, basketball hosted a youth camp, and cross country began a summer running program. Staff noted teams raise funds for causes such as cancer charities and the Bulldog Pantry and that several teams host teacher- and first-responder-recognition nights.
Upcoming special events and recognitions Staff listed several upcoming fall events: a kinder-senior walk on Oct. 24 and a student recognition event during halftime on Oct. 10. In the superintendent—s report, the board was told the West York Area High School chapter of the National Honor Society will induct new members on Sept. 22 at 6 p.m. The superintendent also announced Amanda Burt, the high school life-skills teacher, was selected as one of WGAL—s "8 Who Care" honorees; filming took place on-site and the segment will air in the coming days.
