New downtown restaurant owner asks board for nearby handicap parking

A new Petoskey resident and business owner requested designated handicap parking near Petoskey Street to improve access for customers; staff said the downtown parking committee will review the request.
Alexander Petock, a Petoskey resident and co-owner of Petock Culinary Experiences, told the Downtown Management Board during public comment that his planned brick-and-mortar restaurant on Petoskey Street needs nearby handicap parking.
“I originally wanted to propose a 10 to 15 minute loading zone … but after thinking about it, the most important thing we need is a handicap parking spot,” Petock said, adding that many prospective customers have mobility or health issues and that winter weather will make long walks difficult.
Petock said the spot would not need to be directly in front of his business but should be nearby on Petoskey Street to serve customers who use wheelchairs or who have limited mobility.
Board staff responded that the downtown parking committee regularly reviews on-street and off-street parking, including handicap locations, and that the committee would take up Petock’s request and follow up. “We can certainly have the committee review that request, and we can either have staff get back to you or kinda go from there,” Amy said.
No formal action was taken during the meeting; Petock’s request was referred to the downtown parking committee for review.
