Board asks staff to present conference takeaways; public urges more building visits and transparency

At the Aug. 28 Avon Grove School District board meeting, a board member asked administration to require staff who attend conferences to report back to the board, and the superintendent agreed to provide a plan and template for those presentations at the September Committee of the Whole meeting.
Kenny Rourke, a board member, asked that staff who attended conferences return to the board with presentations describing what they learned and how it could be implemented in district classrooms. Rourke said he had raised the request at the board retreat and that board approval had previously supported requiring presentations for three conference trips.
Superintendent Dr. DeJong told the board he would compile information on conferences attended during the 2024–25 school year and provide a recommendation for a standing presentation template. He said two of the three conferences have already occurred (a special-education conference and an innovative schools conference in July) and the third will take place in November; he said the administration would work with those who attended to share findings at the September Committee of the Whole meeting.
Separately, public commenter Natalie Ortega Moran urged the board to expand the annual board building visits. Ortega Moran said the current single annual visit “does not necessarily provide a big picture” and recommended multiple visits to every building, including the district office, and suggested assigning board-member building liaisons to increase visibility and trust for new teachers. She also urged the board to consider observing a wider range of classrooms rather than focusing on AP courses.
Board members discussed creating a standing template for conference reports so staff would not have to repeatedly design presentation formats. The board and administration agreed to test a recommended template and schedule presentations in the September Committee of the Whole meeting.
The discussion produced no formal vote; the board directed staff to prepare the template and arrange the requested presentations as part of committee work.
