Mayor proclaims Hispanic Heritage Month; Fiesta on the Square set for Sept. 13 in Perry Square

Mayor Joe Schember proclaimed Sept. 15 through Oct. 15 as Hispanic Heritage Month for the City of Erie and urged residents to attend Fiesta on the Square, a community celebration scheduled for Saturday, Sept. 13, from 12 p.m. to 7 p.m. in Perry Square.
The proclamation recognizes local Hispanic and Latino residents and highlights the work of two local groups: the Erie Latino Leadership Association (ELLA) and the Mayor’s Hispanic Latine Advisory Council (HLAC). Schember noted both groups have worked to convene community members and support the city’s cultural programming.
Brandy Cortez, a charter member of the Mayor’s Hispanic Latine Advisory Council, introduced council members present at the press conference and thanked city staff for supporting the advisory council. "Not everybody could be here today, but we'd like to recognize the current members of the Hispanic Latine Advisory Council," Cortez said, and she named several members who were present.
Eddie Ocasio, a founding member of the Erie Latino Leadership Association, outlined the entertainment lineup for Fiesta on the Square. He described the schedule as beginning with DJ Sands at noon, followed by live sets that include local performers Homeboy Music (12:30–1 p.m.), Alex Baby (2 p.m.), Mambo (3 p.m.), Iram Martinez (4:30 p.m., from Cleveland) and concluding with La Crema from Buffalo at 6 p.m. "A fiesta without music is nothing," Ocasio said.
Sarah Shinske listed nonfood and food vendors confirmed for the event and said the festival will include child-friendly activities such as a bounce house and free face painting. The press conference itinerary notes there will be 24 business and nonprofit resource tables at the festival.
Sponsors named by organizers include Plastec (presenting sponsor), Musica on Perry Square, Erie Insurance, Northwest Bank, Erie Retina Research and the Erie County Gaming Revenue Authority, among others. Organizers directed people to the event's Facebook page for a full list of sponsors, vendors and the entertainment lineup.
The mayor closed his remarks by thanking volunteers and organizers and invited residents to attend the event in Perry Square.
