Committee members discussed increasing funding for public relations and communications positions, hiring two Cherokee Nation employees to support council communications, and a contract or expanded service to improve online codification of Cherokee Nation laws.
Kevin Easley and other council members described the codification project as an effort to make enacted statutes easier to search and read online; Thomson Reuters was discussed as a potential vendor but councilors said the committee may pursue other vendors or adjust the existing contract. Staff member Jody said an initial allocation of $100,000 was being considered for the online codification work and that $75,000 in existing contract services would be reduced to offset some costs, resulting in a net $25,000 increase to the contract services line in staff's estimate.
Council discussion emphasized the value of hiring two employees (rather than relying solely on contractors) to retain institutional access to government vehicles, accounts, and systems needed to maintain records and upload materials. Members said the goal is to update the council’s website, improve searchability of enacted statutes, and bring the codification work current so future laws are easier to find.
No formal vote on these budget items occurred during the excerpted discussion; councilors said those changes will be included in a formal budget modification that will be circulated and voted on in a subsequent meeting.
