Board approves three probationary teacher hires and names J.D. Keefe executive director of special services

The Northville Public Schools Board of Education voted to approve probationary contracts for three new teachers for the 2025–26 school year and to appoint J.D. Keefe as Executive Director of Special Services under a two-year central-office contract.

The board approved one-year probationary NEA teacher contracts for Heather Finn (1.0 FTE), Paige Bartek (1.0 FTE) and Riley Zahra (1.0 FTE) after administration presented each candidate’s background and references. The motion to hire the three teachers was presented by Ms. Meyer and supported by Dr. Ken Voitel; the board approved the motion by voice vote.

Administration described Heather Finn as having experience in first and second grades at Saline Public Schools and a master’s in literacy studies; Paige Bartek was introduced after long-term substitute work in the district and came recommended for strong classroom management and student relationships; Riley Zahra was described as a Northville graduate with early-childhood experience in the district and academic honors from Michigan State University.

The board also approved a two-year central-office leadership contract for J.D. Keefe as Executive Director of Special Services. Board members who spoke during the recommendation highlighted Keefe’s long record in special education — including roles as a teacher, team leader and supervisor — and multiple letters of recommendation. The motion to approve Keefe’s contract was presented by Ms. Meyer and supported by Ms. Stewart; the motion passed by voice vote.

Why it matters: district hiring decisions affect classroom staffing, program delivery and special education leadership. Board members welcomed the new teachers and praised Keefe’s experience as important for continuity in special services.
