Northville reports preliminary enrollment gain but officials caution numbers could fall before official count

District staff told the school board the district is up 93 students in preliminary counts but expects the final fall count to be lower; one new housing development already produced an enrollment.
Rebecca Peck, enrollment staff, told the Northville Public Schools Board of Education that the district’s preliminary data show a net increase of 93 students compared with last year — 21 in elementary school, 29 in middle school and 43 in high school — but she cautioned the figure is likely to decline before the official fall count.
“It’s hot off the press as of today,” Peck said, and added that “it’s not real until fall count happens,” which the district counts in October. She told the board the district historically projects a larger bump over the summer only to see some families unenroll or move before the official count; based on prior patterns she said the district will “probably land around 40 increase.”
The report included an example of immediate enrollment from new housing. Peck said the district received “our first enrollment from the Down’s development” and that the student had occupancy documentation, meaning the family had certified the unit for occupancy and was eligible for enrollment.
Superintendent Dr. Weber introduced the update and said administration will continue to monitor enrollment and that the district will share updates with the board as counts stabilize. Devin (district finance/staff) framed the projection in budget terms during later discussion: the board heard the district uses such projections when preparing the next year’s budget but that budget assumptions are revised after the official fall count.
Why it matters: pupil counts determine state aid and influence staffing and class-section decisions. Board members asked for continued updates and for district staff to present refined figures as September approaches.
The district will report final official counts after the October fall count and continue updates to the board in the interim.
