Kiwanis Club proposes 'Flags of Honor' display on Imperial Avenue; seeks city permission and donor support

Kirk Liptick and Chuck Fisher described plans to place flags approximately every eight feet along the frontage road between a local sandwich shop and the library, raising the display on six (possibly seven) observances per year—Patriots Day, Veterans Day (Nov. 11), Presidents Day, Flag Day, Memorial Day and July 4 (and possibly adding an additional date). The club proposed a $100 annual donation for a placard dedication attached to a flag; the program is intended as a fundraiser for Kiwanis youth programs and as a civic pride project.
Liptick said the club modeled the proposal on successful displays in other cities and had walked the corridor; he estimated the full length could accommodate about 200 flags. Councilmembers and staff asked about security, theft and city clearances. Kiwanis said it will coordinate with the city’s engineering department on clearances and that similar programs have not experienced notable vandalism in other jurisdictions. Staff said they will coordinate with Mr. Campos and the engineering department on permitting and public‑rights‑of‑way clearances; no formal council action was taken at the meeting.
Kiwanis representatives said they plan a soft launch on Veterans Day and will involve youth Key Club volunteers in installation and maintenance.
