Rogers County commissioners receive FEMA disaster-claims update; storm-shelter work nearly complete

At their Aug. 28 meeting, Rogers County commissioners heard an update on pending FEMA disaster claims and local recovery work, county staff said.
County staff member Carl told commissioners the state is handling appeals on the county's FEMA claims and requested additional information that was already in the county's system. He said a recent recovery transition meeting (RTM) completed the county's move from FEMA oversight to state management for disaster number 4791.
“The RTM was completed week before last,” Carl said. “This takes us out of FEMA's hands and puts us in the state hands for disaster 4791. We're starting Monday on, asphalting some of those projects. We're gonna go ahead and get them done.”
Carl said the last tranche of incoming funds covered projects in District 1 and management costs, and staff are working to deposit those funds into the correct accounts. When a commissioner asked about storm shelters, Carl said the program is “down to the last 20” shelters and the county is waiting on an additional draw request he has submitted to release further payments.
Carl also said the county is still waiting on road inspection reports from the Oklahoma Department of Transportation and that he expects the agency will take a few weeks to complete its reviews.
Why it matters: moving from FEMA to state oversight changes which agency reviews remaining claims and can affect the timing of reimbursements and project work. The county description of remaining funds, imminent asphalting and near-complete storm-shelter payments gives residents and contractors an updated timetable for recovery activity in affected areas.
The county did not present a timetable for when the state will complete appeals or when ODOT reports will be finalized.
Commissioners present during the update included Commissioner John Brown, Commissioner Delosier and Commissioner Hendricks. No formal vote or directive was recorded; the item was an informational briefing.
