Tourism office seeks council letter of support for three pedestrian underpasses on Sheep Bridge Road

At the Sept. 10 work session, council members discussed a request from Greater Zion (Washington County's tourism office) seeking a letter of support for a UDOT grant application to build three pedestrian underpasses along Sheep Bridge Road. Staff circulated a map showing the proposed underpass locations and recommended the council consider supportive correspondence to accompany the application.
Staff described the underpasses as intended to improve pedestrian and bicycle safety by allowing trail users to cross Sheep Bridge Road without negotiating high-speed vehicle lanes. Council members noted plans call for a path on each side of the road and said the underpasses would benefit cyclists and pedestrians given higher vehicle speeds on that corridor.
Because the request is a standard letter of support for a regional grant, staff said it did not necessarily require a formal agenda item for the regular meeting and could be handled by circulating a draft letter for council members to approve via e-mail or text. Council members asked staff to draft a letter of support, gather project contacts and circulate the draft for approval ahead of the grant deadline.
No formal vote occurred. Staff will draft the requested letter and circulate it to council members for approval.
