The Dorchester County Board of Zoning Appeals approved a special exception on Sept. 24 to allow a ground transportation freight terminal (listed as Use Group 19 in the county ordinance) on a commercially zoned parcel. Approval was conditioned on the applicant revising the current site plan to meet federal, state and county requirements and subject to review and approval by the county’s Technical Review Committee (TRC).
County planning staff described the proposed use as a freight terminal where trailers loaded with containers would be weighed, inspected, tagged and staged for export to the ports of Charleston or Savannah.
