Sanford Street resident urges automated enforcement in school zone after repeated crashes

Resident Brian Bedford addressed the council on Sept. 23 about high speeds in the Sanford Street school zone and asked the city to consider automated enforcement. Bedford said a crossing guard called police after a crash, vehicles have struck a nearby building and fire hydrant, and “the speed is ridiculous on the street.”
“I don't believe that's been carried out,” Bedford said of prior council suggestions for increased patrols. He urged the council to consider an automatic ticket-writing machine or speed camera, noting the street serves a school for children with disabilities and poses a particular safety risk.
Bedford asked the council to act “sooner than later” and said he had raised the issue in April; he requested the city pursue a camera-based enforcement option if patrols are not increased.
