Hillsboro School District reports summer programs served thousands; bilingual, STEAM and credit-recovery efforts highlighted

HILLSBORO, Ore. — Hillsboro School District staff told the board on Sept. 9 that the district ran multiple summer programs in 2025 that reached thousands of children across elementary, middle and high schools, but said future program length and scope depend on continued funding.

District staff described a multilingual summer program targeting migrant and newcomer students; credit-recovery offerings for high-schoolers; four career-technical education camps (including middle- and high-school camps); a new elementary STEAM program; extended-school-year (ESY) services for students with Individualized Education Programs; an early-literacy intervention at two sites; and a Kinder Jumpstart for incoming kindergarten students at Title I schools.

Why it matters: The presentation showed the district trying to balance outreach, academic recovery and enrichment across a wide geography (including rural meal sites), while relying on a mix of one-time and grant funds. Board members asked how the district can sustain or expand offerings if grant money is uncertain.
