GEAR UP case manager describes program serving 291 Natrona County students, $13.6M in scholarships noted

Elora Tuft, the high-school case manager for GEAR UP, briefed the Natrona County School District #1 board on the federally funded college-readiness program during the public-comment period.
Tuft said GEAR UP — Gaining Early Awareness and Readiness for Undergraduate Programs — is a statewide, federally funded grant that serves about 2,000 income-eligible Wyoming students in grades 7–12 each year. She told the board that 291 of those students are in Natrona County and that the program’s last grant cycle (2017–2024) helped 96% of participating students graduate high school and placed students in colleges across 36 states. Tuft also said students in prior cycles earned a total of $13,600,000 in GEAR UP and Hathaway scholarships and that the program captures $4,019,424 in matched nonfederal funding annually.
Tuft described services the program provides locally, including monthly meetings with case managers on college readiness topics, FAFSA-completion nights, family dinners, and other college- and career-preparation activities. She thanked the district and board for allowing GEAR UP staff into district schools and asked the community to acknowledge the program’s work during National GEAR UP Week.
The board received the report as information; no formal action was taken.
