Rockbridge supervisors postpone vote on weekday noise-hour change after residents testify about frequent student parties
Summary
After extensive public comment about repeated weekday parties in student neighborhoods, the board agreed to postpone a vote and asked the county attorney to draft exception language for community organizations and to return with options at the next meeting.
A public hearing on amendments to Rockbridge County’s noise ordinance drew multiple residents on Sept. 22 who described persistent late-night parties in neighborhoods near Washington and Lee University. The Board of Supervisors closed the hearing and voted to postpone a final decision until its next meeting to allow staff to draft language for exceptions and enforcement details.
County staff presented a draft change to county code section 4‑43 that would alter the times the ordinance is in effect on weekdays (Sunday–Thursday). Under the current ordinance, loud noises are prohibited after 11 p.m. on weeknights and after midnight on weekends. The draft under review would move the weekday cutoff earlier; board members discussed options including 10 p.m. or 9 p.m.
