Kootenai County commissioners approve Breakthrough T1D aid station on county property

The Kootenai County Board of Commissioners voted unanimously Sept. 23 to allow Breakthrough T1D to operate an aid station on county property at a pullout on Hayden Lake during the group's Sept. 27 bike ride.

Chuck Hodge, representing Breakthrough T1D, told commissioners the organization (formerly the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation) plans to stage the aid station between about 8:30 a.m. and 10:30 a.m. during the one-day fundraiser. Hodge said about 90 riders are expected this year, with roughly half completing the loop around Hayden Lake, and that the group plans to place porta-potties and water at the site and to leave the location cleaner than they found it.

The board's approval was made by motion and recorded as unanimous: Commissioner Eberline, Commissioner Duncan and Chair Metari voted "aye." No conditions were attached to the approval in the public record.

Why it matters: Breakthrough T1D's ride is a local fundraiser for diabetes research, and the aid station requires temporary use of county land and placement of facilities that could affect lakeside access and maintenance.

Details provided to commissioners said last year's event drew several hundred participants and relied on a private parcel that is not available this year. Hodge said the organization located the county pullout after searching for an alternative and asked the board for short-term permission to use county property for the event.

Commissioners did not discuss permit fees or insurance requirements during the public discussion; no staff conditions were recorded. The board's approval will allow Breakthrough T1D to proceed with the aid station on Sept. 27 as requested.

The county meeting adjourned after subsequent agenda items; county staff did not provide additional written conditions on the record at the status-update meeting.
