Committee asks administration to develop cellphone and AI policy drafts with stakeholder input and cost estimates

Policy advisory members discussed two emerging policy areas on Sept. 22: state cellphone restrictions at schools and rules for classroom use of artificial intelligence. The committee directed administration to gather stakeholder input, consult legal guidance and estimate any fiscal costs before returning proposals.
Administration representatives said they will consult the state statute and the district's legal counsel for interpretation of cellphone rules (for example, whether phones must be physically collected or may remain on a student's person), and will convene teachers, students and families for input. At the high-school level the committee noted other districts use phone-storage pouches or similar systems and that such an approach entails a fiscal impact; administrators were asked to gather cost estimates and identify potential grant sources.
Committee members also asked that any AI-use policy be developed in parallel, with stakeholder engagement and attention to classroom instruction needs, privacy and academic integrity. Administration said it will return with sample language, legal guidance, and projected implementation costs for the committee to consider before advancing a formal draft.
