Committee members raised practical questions about how the policy would be implemented in classrooms and in school events. Several participants said the policy should emphasize positive, educational approaches (authentic cultural practices, invited cultural presenters and historical context) and avoid punitive interpretations that could inadvertently penalize staff who intend to teach or celebrate cultural subjects. Examples discussed included school dances and classroom projects: members said activities with context and community involvement (for instance using cultural experts) differ from events that reduce a culture to costume or decoration.
Administrators said the district will circulate the draft to teachers and school staff for comment, consult legal guidance as needed, and follow up with professional development so teachers can distinguish between authentic cultural instruction and actions that could be experienced as appropriation. The committee planned to review consolidated feedback at a future meeting.
