The Lake Elsinore City Council voted Wednesday to fill the vacancy created when Councilmember Natasha Johnson resigned after her election to the State Assembly, choosing an appointment process over a special election and forming a subcommittee to review applicants.
City Clerk Candace Alvarez told the council that “under state law and council policy, you must either fill the vacancy by appointment or call a special election within 60 days.” Alvarez said an appointment application period would run from Sept. 24 to Oct. 7, with the earliest potential appointment returning to council on Oct. 14. If the council appoints a person, Alvarez said that appointee would serve only until a successor is elected; a special election on June 2, 2026, was presented as an alternative at an estimated cost of $32,000.
