Port Canaveral reports passenger and cargo growth, third modified mobile harbor crane delivered

Port Canaveral staff reported strong year-to-date cruise and cargo performance and provided operational updates on cruise ship schedules, cargo handling and space-industry recoveries.
Cruise operations and passengers: Through August the port reported roughly 8,000,000 multi-day passengers year to date and 966 cruise calls through eleven months, representing increases versus the prior year. Staff said they expected to exceed the budgeted annual passenger count and highlighted a string of schedule changes in August: the Star of the Seas began seven-night sailings on Aug. 31 and had five unbudgeted sailings that month; the Mardi Gras departed for dry dock Sept. 13 and is due to return Oct. 30; Disney Magicreturned Nov. 16 to resume sailings and Disney Magichad a final sailing Oct. 20 (dates and schedule changes were presented as August-related items by port operations staff).
Cargo and space recovery: Cargo calls were reported at 771 (including lay berths) and cargo tonnage at approximately 5,600,000 tons year to date. The port also reported 176 recovered boosters and 142 recovered fairings year to date tied to space industry operations.
Equipment and facilities: Port staff said a third mobile harbor crane arrived on Aug. 3; the crane was modified (mast elevation and counterweight changes) to increase reach and lift capacity needed for some space-industry booster-handling tasks. Staff said their mobile harbor cranes are among the tallest in the nation because of mast elevation modifications made to accommodate booster handling.
Community and events: The port noted its recreational campground averaged about 50 percent occupancy for the month and that Jetty Park reached day-park capacity for a large "wave out" community event tied to the Star of the Seas. Port staff also discussed outreach events in August, including chamber luncheons, a community wave-out event that drew about 1,000 attendees, a Space Coast symposium and other business-development activities. Staff announced an employee-driven Toys for Tots drive accepting donations through Dec. 15.
