Yolo County proclaims Child Passenger Safety Week, marks Chalk Walk & Roll Day to promote pedestrian safety

Yolo County supervisors on Sept. 23 proclaimed Sept. 27 as National Seat Check Saturday and designated September as Pedestrian Safety Month in connection with Chalk Walk & Roll Day, a community outreach effort that uses sidewalk chalk art to promote safe walking and rolling behaviors.

Supervisor Allen presented two resolutions honoring child passenger safety week and Chalk Walk & Roll Day. County traffic-safety staff described free car-seat checkups that are available by appointment through Health and Human Services and highlighted a recent county event at the Davis Public Library where families created sidewalk chalk art and learned pedestrian-safety messages.

Steven (Steve) Jensen, a traffic-safety staffer, told the board that car-seat installation often requires consulting three manuals (vehicle, car seat and child) and that nearly 80% of pedestrian fatalities occur after dark. He urged drivers to slow down and not pass vehicles stopped at crosswalks. Staff said the chalk-art signage remains on display along Fourteenth Street in Woodland at the library and Vets Memorial Building and is presented in English and Spanish.
