Plan Commission approves sign-code amendments to align with court decisions and state law

The Appleton City Plan Commission on Sept. 24 approved text amendments to Article 14 of Chapter 23 of the Municipal Code that update the city’s sign code to reflect recent court decisions and state law.
Lindsay (staff member) told the commission the package had been presented as an informational item on Aug. 27 and that there were no subsequent changes. She said the text was revised to ensure compliance with new federal court decisions and applicable state statute and that the city attorney’s office had been involved in drafting to ensure the changes were legally defensible.
No members of the public spoke during the public hearing. After a brief staff presentation there was a single motion and second; the commission approved the amendments by voice vote with no recorded opposition (agenda item 25-10-98).
The staff memo in the meeting packet said the revisions were intended to align municipal sign regulations with controlling case law and statutory requirements; staff recommended approval. The commission gave unanimous approval and did not attach additional conditions.
