Council approves Methodist Hospital emergency department expansion and parking changes

Midlothian City Council unanimously approved an amendment to Planned Development District 113 on Sept. 23 to allow an 8,740-square-foot emergency department expansion and 36 additional parking spaces at the Methodist Hospital site near Don Floyd Drive and U.S. Highway 287.
City planner Mary Elliott said the original PD included a detailed concept plan and that the hospital project sought additional administrative flexibility for the expansion. She said the expansion would be consistent with existing building elevations and that the site would include limited new landscape near the helipad, using sod and three crepe myrtle trees.
Matt Jokel, an attorney with Winstead PC representing the hospital, said representatives from the hospital and the project architect were present to answer technical questions. Staff reported that 12 postcards were mailed to property owners within 200 feet and that no written correspondence opposing the project had been received.
Councilman Weaver moved to approve the PD amendment as presented; the motion was seconded by Councilman Rogers. The motion passed unanimously, 6-0.
Staff recommended approval, noting the expansion is consistent with the city’s Newtown module future land-use designation and surrounding zoning. The council closed the public hearing with no public speakers opposing the project and approved the ordinance.
