Animal-control staff report shelter intake and city approves construction-manager amendment for new shelter

Oscar Myers, a Shawnee Animal Control officer, presented the monthly “pet of the month” and shelter statistics, and commissioners approved an amendment to the construction-manager-at-risk contract for the new animal shelter.
Myers said the shelter began the month with 16 dogs and two cats, took in 23 more dogs and six more cats, adopted out four dogs and no cats during the period, and ended the month with 26 dogs and three cats. He introduced a two-year-old dog named “Teeny,” which he said is available for adoption.
Separately, Seth Barkheimer, director of engineering, presented an amendment to the contract with Downey Contracting LLC for construction-manager-at-risk services on the new animal-welfare facility. The amendment sets a guaranteed maximum price (GMP) at $1,478,239, which staff said falls within the project’s CIP budget of $1,500,000. The commission approved the amendment 6–0.
Why it matters: Rezoning and construction approvals advance a new city animal-welfare facility intended to replace or supplement existing shelter capacity; the GMP establishes the maximum contract cost for the CMAR phase pending subcontractor awards and ongoing oversight.
