Carmel council recognizes new CPD K‑9 teams

The Carmel Common Council paused routine business on Sept. 15 to recognize two new Carmel Police Department K‑9 teams.
Lieutenant Katie Malloy, the department’s canine unit coordinator, introduced K9 Atlas (handled by Officer Mark Parshall) and K9 Rook (handled by Officer Christian Wilhite). Malloy said the two additions bring the department to one canine per 12‑hour shift and praised community donors: Becky Wannick and Jack Reinhardt, Jeff and Pamela Greenwalt and the Heroes Club.
Malloy said Atlas, a two‑year‑old Malinois from France trained at Ultimate Canine in Westfield, graduated from narcotics detection and patrol classes and has been deployed more than 60 times, assisting in seizures of cocaine, methamphetamine, MDMA and fentanyl. "Canine Atlas... has seized narcotics to include cocaine, meth, ecstasy, and fentanyl," Malloy said. She noted both new dogs are imprinted on fentanyl detection.
Malloy said Rook, a three‑year‑old Malinois from Romania, also trained at Ultimate Canine and was recognized in his class for narcotics detection and as the top team. Rook’s deployments have led to narcotics seizures and two firearms being recovered from prohibited individuals.
Councilors and staff thanked the handlers and community supporters for their contributions to the canine program. No formal council action was required for the recognition.
