Board approves grant-backed limestone step replacement at Banneker Community Center

The Bloomington Board of Park Commissioners on Aug. 26 approved the selection of LRT Restoration Technologies to replace the historic limestone front steps at the Banneker Community Center.

Kevin Terrell, program and facility coordinator for the Banneker Community Center, told the board the project is within the scope of an Indiana Department of Natural Resources historic-preservation grant. He said the IDNR will provide $22,500 toward the work and that the center’s nonreverting account will cover the remaining $46,415. Terrell said the work will follow IDNR guidelines and preserve the historic character of the building while improving safety for users.

"We would like to select them to do the replacement steps project at Banneker. I feel this is a much needed project for the safety of the users of the community center, and it also will be conducted within the guidelines of the IDNR and within the spirit of the historical building that we are in," Terrell said.

The board approved the award by roll-call vote. Staff indicated the project proceeded after receiving necessary IDNR approval and that the contract will be scheduled and executed consistent with grant requirements.

Background and next steps

Terrell said the IDNR had to approve the selected contractor and provided that approval. Staff thanked local consultant Doug Bruce and noted the project will be scheduled so it meets grant conditions and preserves the building’s historic materials. Work timing and contractor start dates will be finalized after contract execution and grant reporting requirements are set.
