The board held a first reading of a set of policy amendments and administrative updates, including revisions to the class size/class grouping policy and edits to the district's equal educational opportunity complaint form.
During discussion a board member asked why specific categories (for example gender identity and political belief) were being removed from the complaint form. A district staff member said the change was made on HR's recommendation and clarified that removing the fields only affects how incidents are reported to the state; it does not change the district's obligation to investigate allegations of bullying or harassment. "Any complaint that comes in...we have to deal with," the staff member said, adding that the complaint process will still address repeated or targeted behavior that harms a student's participation, safety or grades.
Board members requested clearer communication to staff, students and families explaining that the policy language changes do not prevent anyone from submitting a complaint. The district agreed to return with additional outreach and clarified materials to ensure parents and students understand complaint options.
The board approved the policy package on first reading by voice vote; specific language changes will return for final approval after the public-review period required for policy amendments.
