Board agrees to assign new housing development to South Elementary; staff to adjust routes

Caswell County Schools staff recommended — and the board approved — assigning a newly proposed housing development to South Elementary School because the majority of the subdivision falls in South's attendance area and South is accessible to the development.
Transportation staff reported that the subdivision's internal loop and majority of lots are inside the South district while the private access road is located in the Oakwood zone. Staff said the current bus stop placement and routing meant students from the new development would be more practically assigned to South. The staff presentation noted there are currently six houses in the horseshoe and one home with two students that did not yet have a clear district assignment; staff recommended those students be enrolled in South for the coming school year.
Board members discussed proximity between Oakwood and South, bus capacity, and the option to grandfather students where appropriate. Staff said they will flush the bus stop for routing and that any students who enroll this year from the development will be assigned to South Elementary.
The board approved staff’s recommendation to place the development in South Elementary’s attendance area and to proceed with routing and enrollment as described. Staff will return with precise routing and bus-stop information as construction progresses.
