Parent asks board to add teacher at Sun Creek Elementary to reduce class sizes

"A classroom for younger elementary students of 22 and higher is not a good environment when children get the attention that they need," Howard said. She described combined second- and third-grade classes she experienced as a parent and said smaller classes allowed the students she knew to "excel" after moving into smaller third-grade classes.
Howard asked the board to consider the effect of large class sizes on individualized instruction, classroom management and teacher workload. "An additional teacher would allow Stony Creek to reduce class sizes, giving each student the personal support that they need," she said, using the school name she referenced in public comment.
Her remarks were part of the meeting's public-comment period; board members did not take an immediate vote on her request during the comment period. Staff and trustees discussed staffing and funding at length later in the meeting, including use of Title I funds and a fund-balance supplement.
Howard concluded her remarks by saying she hoped the board would "take that into consideration."
