Garland CMC selects nominating committee ahead of October officer election

The Community Multicultural Commission on Sept. 18 established a nominating committee to prepare a slate of candidates for the commission's annual election of chair and vice chair, scheduled for Oct. 16.
Commissioners volunteered to serve on the nominating committee; staff will supply contact lists and phone numbers for members to call. The nominating committee process described at the meeting follows prior practice: committee members contact prospective candidates to ask whether they wish to be considered, assemble a slate and present it to the full commission for a secret‑ballot election.
Staff and commissioners clarified the officer terms: the chair and vice chair serve one‑year terms and may serve up to three consecutive years in the same office. Commissioners said training materials (bylaws) are available and that city staff will assist new officers with onboarding.
Volunteers for the nominating committee included Commissioner Merrill and Commissioner Steven; staff said it will distribute phone lists so committee members can begin outreach. The committee will report back at the next regular meeting in October where the election will take place.
